Ed (he/him/his) is an ANCC Board-Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who offers medication management and therapy services. He’s a sex-positive, open-minded healthcare worker who acknowledges his privilege and yet has lived his share of hardship.
How Ed Approaches Care Ed provides care to anyone who is clinically safe for the practice model, no matter their background or where they are in their life journey. He offers psychiatric medication management and mental health wellness through a whole-body approach to care. He considers all of his patients and their life goals, not just a disease process. Another way to look at it is that he looks at the symptoms that impact their life, and then they both agree on how best to treat their needs.
Clinical Experience Ed started his medical career out of high school and has held many clinical and leadership roles. His psychiatry experience includes inpatient and outpatient care, PHP (partial hospitalization program), and IOP (intensive outpatient program), as well as crisis management. Ed offers medication management, ketamine psychotherapy (in Falls Church), Spravato (in Falls Church), and therapy services.
About Ed’s Story Ed is a cis queer male who lives his life within the LGBTQ+ community. He’s a former member of the Board of Directors for Outcare Health, a national nonprofit with a mission to train and support more LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare professionals in the US. He has spoken at many conferences, is a recurring guest on several podcasts, and has been on TV and in print. He was also the co-host of a public radio program in DC on LGBTQ+ equality, diversity, and adversity. Ed created and hosts “PsychNP Cast,” a podcast designed to educate his peers on mental health.
Ask Ed about his life, and he’ll share the details. He’s not shy because he knows others have experienced similar hardship and joy, he’s even openly talked about his personal experiences on podcasts, so no secrets. Ed has also taken a variety of training to help him widen his “old cis white guy” understanding of modern queer life, so he does his best not to be “just another cis gay guy.”
Calvin Layne (He/Him) is a cisgender man who lives his experience within the LGBTQ community. He’s an ANCC Board-Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who provides virtual appointments to clients in DC, VA, and MD.
Calvin brings more than five years of hands-on experience working in pediatric and adolescent mental health as a nurse, and he’s excited to offer that expertise to members of his community as a Nurse Practitioner.
How Calvin Approaches Care Calvin takes a science-based holistic approach to mental health care. He’s not just looking at symptoms – he wants to understand your goals, your lifestyle, your culture, and the real challenges you’re facing every day. This means doing a lot of listening to what you’re actually dealing with and what you want to achieve.
He combines modern medication management with complementary and alternative solutions to help you meet your goals. Calvin prides himself on providing care that’s nonjudgmental, trauma-informed, and inclusive. He believes care should be patient-centered, goal-oriented, and truly collaborative – you’re part of the team.
Clinical Background and Expertise Calvin’s path started with a BA in Psychology from UVA. Wanting more direct impact with patients, he got his BSN at VCU. While working in psychiatry as an RN, he was putting in the work both at school and in direct patient mental health care to earn his MSN from VCU. He then earned his ANCC Board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner across the lifespan.
His specialty focus on pediatric and adolescent mental health means he really gets what younger patients are going through. He understands the unique challenges that come with growing up, figuring out identity, and navigating the world as a young person.
About Calvin Calvin brings both clinical expertise and lived experience as someone in the LGBTQ community. He knows firsthand what it’s like to need healthcare that actually sees and understands you, not just your diagnosis. His approach combines solid science with genuine understanding of diverse experiences and cultural needs.
Koda Brinker (He/Him) is a cisgender man who belongs to the LGBTQ community. He’s an ANCC Board-Certified Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who provides virtual appointments for people in DC and VA, with Maryland coming soon.
How Koda Approaches Care Koda wants to provide treatment that goes way beyond just prescribing medication. He’s interested in you as a whole person – not just your symptoms. He brings together solid clinical science with a deep understanding of cultural practices like reiki and what diverse communities actually need.
Koda works to really understand and collaborate with his patients when creating treatment approaches and improving mental well-being. He builds everything on evidence-based practices, but then tailors the care to fit what each person actually needs and wants.
Clinical Background After graduating from DePaul University with a BS in Health Sciences, Koda knew he wanted direct patient care that could make a real impact. He got his ADN while living in a coastal town in North Carolina. The pandemic inspired him to specialize in mental and psychiatric health, so he completed his MSN from Herzing University while traveling from Philadelphia to various hospitals along the East Coast.
He earned his ANCC Board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and is qualified to work with patients across the whole lifespan.
About Koda When he’s not working, you’ll find Koda traveling with friends, cheering at Philadelphia sporting events, networking at local queer socials, and hanging out with his dogs. He gets that being part of the LGBTQ community means understanding both the challenges and the joy that come with living authentically.
Maura Constance (she/her) is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Family Nurse Practitioner who provides virtual appointments to clients throughout Virginia. She also holds a Master of Public Health from Columbia University and is a certified diabetes educator. Maura brings a unique combination of psychiatric expertise, primary care background, and deep commitment to serving marginalized communities particularly the LGBTQ+ population.
How Maura Approaches Care
Maura’s foundational principle is simple but powerful: providing a space of complete acceptance so that patients can continue to grow in their own self-acceptance, pride, and strength. She employs a humanistic approach that considers the whole person—looking at how past experiences and present circumstances contribute to mental health challenges.
From the very beginning of her nursing career, Maura realized that addressing the psychiatric component of illness was an integral part of walking with patients in their healing journey. She doesn’t just treat symptoms—she partners with you to understand your complete story, your goals, and what you’re working toward in your life.
Clinical Background and Expertise
Maura’s educational journey reflects her commitment to comprehensive care:
Her career has been defined by reaching people who need care most. She started working with HIV-positive street youth at Covenant House in New York City, provided primary care services to uninsured populations at free clinics in Northern Virginia, and later started her own house-calls business focused on outreach to patients with psychiatric illnesses.
Maura has extensive experience helping patients with depression, anxiety, personality disorders, addiction issues, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and ADHD. Her dual certification as both a Psychiatric Mental Health NP and Family NP, combined with her public health training, gives her a uniquely comprehensive perspective on how mental health, physical health, and social determinants interconnect.
About Maura
Maura is deeply connected to the LGBTQ+ community—she has a trans son, queer children, nieces and nephews, and lifelong queer friends. In the early days of the AIDS crisis, she lost several friends to AIDS, including one of her best friends. This experience shaped her deep commitment to providing judgment-free, easily accessible healthcare to the LGBTQ+ community. In the early 1990s, she was a member of the AIDS and Adolescent Network in New York City.
Maura brings both clinical expertise and lived experience as someone whose family is part of the LGBTQ+ community. She understands firsthand the importance of healthcare providers who truly see and affirm their patients.
When she’s not working, you’ll find Maura running, biking, reading, visiting art museums, and spending time with her husband, her five children, and the rest of their family.
